Ecuador is the smallest of the 14 countries of the South America continent.
It is situated on the equator, from which the country derives its name . The country may be small, but it boasts stunning biodiversity and 4 different climate zones.
The equator runs through the whole planet, but most of it is in countries with jungle areas or in the bottom of the oceans. Equador is the only country where you can literally stand over a line which devides the North and South hemispheres and then tell your friends that you had been on both continents at the same time.
To the north Ecuador borders Colombia, to the South East- Peru and to the west is Pacific Ocean. The country’s capital is Quito, with a population of 2.3 mln. People. Quito is the seat of the government agencies and the Presidential Palace, located in Old Historic Center of Quito. Few years ago this area had undergone a $205 mln. Investment of restoring the original Spanish Colonial architecture, thus making the Historic Center of Quito the most beautiful in all of South America’s caitals.
The business center of the country is the city of Guayaquil, with a population of 4,5 mln. people.
Quito is a city on a high elevation of the Sierra Mountains, about 9200 feet high. Its climate is very mild, cool and breezy in the afternoon and a bit chilly at night. It is notable that the sun comes up at 6.30 am and the night sets at 6.30 pm- these exact 12 hour frames are based on the position on the Equator- the “Middle of the World”. The country is situated on the bulge of the planet, hence it is the closest to the sun, which tends to be fiercely strong and the foreigners, not being too used to it, should always wear hats and skin protection.
Ecuador does not have cold winters, only rainy season, between January lasting until end of April. Rainy season displays itself through 25-30 minute rains every 3-4 days and dries up very fast. The food of the country is very healthy and natural. Ecuadorians do not like spicy foods and their foods and drinks are light on salt and sugars. In the capital of Quito it is common to see fresh juice stands, where right in front of you they will make a glass of fresh fruit juice from a selection of 10-12 fruits of your choice for just $1.75. Ecuador’s tourist agencies are starting to offer “ detoxification” tours, where a person can have all these fresh foods and juices and get a health boost during their visit to the country.
The population of Ecuador is 26mln. And the average age is 26 years old. The country had a history of 530 years of living under the colony of Spain and after few fierce battles the Spaniards were defeated and left the country.
Soon afterwards the country adopted its current name of ECUADOR.
